Nathan <nreadey@gmail.com> today - mike, actually there's not as much job obligation as you'd think. atleast in the job i do. i work from 7 a.m. to about 2 p.m. i work at an assault craft unit (it's interesting, i work on hovercrafts) so there's not as much work to do as there is on a ship. i stand duty (the navy has no janitors but there are some police but not that many, so people from a command do their jobs and then on their duty day stand watches and clean)once every 5 days. so it's always rotating. so i do have a good amount of free time. the only thing that's really hindering about it is obviously being an american in japan you stand out in the extreme for obvious reasons. but the base does offer tours to different sites around japan. i live in a small town by japanese standards (about 250,000 people) so it's pretty easy to find things. and i got lucky becuase most of my friends here have been here for a while and are cool with the japanese people so i can get into alot of the bars without a japanese escort.
